PHOENIX (AP) Cheryl Miller watched intently at All-Star weekend practice on Friday as Caitlin Clark initiated the offense, whipping the ball around the perimeter before a pass to center Jonquel Jones led to an easy layup. Then they did it again this time it was Angel Reese who finished with a bucket.
The WNBAs future was right in front of her. And the sight was glorious.
The 60-year-old coach beamed: The possibilities are endless.
Miller a womens hoops trailblazer and one of the games early stars in the 1980s will be the coach for Team WNBA when it faces the U.S. National Team in the leagues All-Star game on Saturday. For Miller, its the culmination of more than 40 years of working to grow the womens game.
Its a unique collaboration of the best players in the world, Miller said. What coach on this planet wouldnt want to be in that situation? Now its my job is just to stand back, roll out the ball and be the cheerleader. Itll be a lot of fun.

Cheryl Reeve is a petty and jealous person who in my opinion has no business coaching - especially Team USA Womens Basketball

(2,080 posts)I realize you may not like her for some reason, but lets review her record coaching in the W:
Reeve has coached the Lynx to four league championships. In WNBA history, she has the highest winning percentage, she has won the most games of any female coach, and she has won the most postseason games of any coach. Reeve was named the WNBA Coach of the Year in 2011, 2016, and 2020.

(17,008 posts)There is more to be a coach than a winning record. Its being a role model and being someone who demonstrates being inspirational. She has demonstrated poor judgement and being a poor role model especially in her recent behavior regarding commentary regarding Caitlin Clark and leaving her and some others off the Olympic Team.
As I said - Coach Cheryl Miller just demonstrated what it means to be a great coach - not Cheryl Reeve.

I think Caitlin Clark belongs on the national team. She has the skills and basketball IQ and the desire to win.

(2,080 posts)but remember, May 3 was a week and a half before the season even started. Team rosters were not even set yet.
And this was a week and a half before CC played even one game in the W. At the time, even though we knew she was a good player, no one knew how long it would take for her to adjust to playing professional women's basketball. Even for the best college ball players it takes a few weeks to adjust to the increased speed and and increased physical play. So yeah, if I was a coach I wouldn't worry about CC or any other player before the season started.
I have been watching W games for several years, and started watching women's college ball games this last spring (to see CC and Angel Reese and Cameron Brink) and as good as they all were, they were playing in slow motion compared to the professionals.
Yesterday's game showed that both CC and Angel Reese have adjusted very well.
