Update: My 100 y/o stepdad fell & broke his hip yesterday. He's having surgery this morning at 8:30a

He was walking (shuffling) in his slippers and tripped. The doctor said he broke the top of his left femur.

I don't think my 90 y/o mom realizes the gravity of the situation since they have always been very healthy. She seemed to think he was going to have the surgery today then they would go back to their apartment tonight.

I don't know what they're going to do about putting him in rehab. I JUST got her to stop driving when they moved into independent/assisted living 3 months ago but she still has her car. Now I'm afraid she's going to try to drive back & forth to wherever he goes. They're in Port Orange, FL & I'm 500 miles away.

He came through surgery fine and was at a local nursing home for rehab. They even had him up for assisted walking at least once a day. But infection set in and he didn't make it. It's really, really tough.

He wouldn't use the walker and was set to get rid of "the stick".

He was very confused.

I tried to tell him, I tried but he did not listen.

He fell and broke his right hip. He seemed to tolerate the surgery ok but ... sepsis some how set in and that was more or less the end of him.

He was transferred from the hospital to hospice. He was there for almost one week and he was tended to 24/7. I am glad I was able to provide that for him.

He died last night.

It was a such a hell.

I hope your step-dad is able to recover and get well!

Take care of you too.

It is so easy to get lost in the shuffle during this process.

If so, I’d reach out to their church and explain your situation. Most churches have Deacons or committees assigned for congregant care and support.

watching mass on TV. I think their Polish Priest was getting too hard for my stepdad to understand.

I don't know if Catholics have a great outreach program, or at least their last church didn't. They'd pretty much just offer to come to your house and give communion.

Check with their local parish. Catholics are very good at outreach and social justice. Obviously, things vary among individual parishes. You can also call the parish and ask about the St. Vincent De Paul society. They are generally geared toward helping the poor, but they tend to be very resourceful in other areas as well.
