Related: About this forumYou know who doesn't get enough recognition? Fred Zinnemann.
There are lots of great directors who are rightfully celebrated and cited as influences---Ford, Hitchcock, Hawks, Kurosawa, Huston, Welles, Bergman, Fellini, Chaplin. But think of the amazing films that Zinnemann did: "High Noon," "From Here To Eternity," "A Man For All Seasons," "The Day Of The Jackal" (one of my personal favorites), and "Julia," to name a few. The silence on Zinnemann and his four Best Director Oscars seems deafening to me. Anybody else agree?

(40,416 posts)I have seen the others, but I am not a big fan of them, not that Zinnemann did a bad job, it's just that I don't like westerns very much and "From Here to Eternity" doesn't do much for me. I only saw Julia once, so I cannot judge.

(10,000 posts)Possibly my favorite film (depending on which day you ask me. Pretty faithful to the book, and Edward Fox was perfectly cast.

(28,734 posts)Look how Edward Fox plays it---not a single wasted gesture, all lethal competence. One of my favorite movies as well.

(40,416 posts)Michael Lonsdale and Derek Jacoby play a good pair, like Holmes and Watson. The scenes in Britain are great. ("Where's the authority?"

(287 posts)I didn't realize Zinnemann had four Oscars. A Man For All Seasons is my favorite work of his, followed by High Noon.
But I personally don't include Zinnemann in the pantheon of the greats. For my money, number one in that pantheon is Hitch, and he has ZERO best director Oscars! Others I would include are Scorsese (who just won his first Oscar a few years ago), Woody Allen, Billy Wilder, Orson Welles and Tarantino. Yes, Tarantino. I don't think Zinnemann is in the same league as these directors. I'm sure there are others I haven't mentioned who are, but IMO Zinnemann doesn't quite make the cut. Just one man's opinion.
