New movie musical starring Jennifer Lopez

Last evening, we saw a rough-cut preview of a new film based the the stage musical, “Kiss Of The Spider Woman.” It was powerful, moving and intense with a great musical score. It’s based on Manuel Puig’s novel which was adapted by book writer Terrance McNally, composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb in a successful 1992 Broadway production. Bill Condon (“Chicago”) wrote the screenplay and directed the movie.

The deeply dramatic story is about two cellmates in an Argentina prison in 1981. Molina is a gay window dresser who is imprisoned on moral charges while Valentin is a revolutionary hoping to overthrow the corrupt military junta. Through their experiences, they forge a remarkable friendship that ends in tragedy. (This ain’t no Rodger’s & Hammerstein show!)

JLo is stunningly beautiful and sings, dances and acts marvelously. But the real standout was Tonatiuh Elizarraraz who plays Molina. What an amazing talent! He’s a triple threat who acts passionately and persuasively. Then he sings and dances with such aplomb that he more than keeps up with his gorgeous costar. And he’s beautifully handsome.

The film isn’t completed yet and there were spots that clearly need a touch-up. Still, this will be an emotionally moving film. It’s scheduled for release towards the end of the year. I highly recommend this creative endeavor.

Raoul Julia. William Hurt, and Sonia Braga in the leading roles.
The story was timely then and I think will resonate with newer audiences now.
I look forward to seeing it.

After last night, I’m told that it’ll be pushed back because of more edits and possible reshoots.

It’s impressive.
