The largest independent gun retailer in the US has slashed its sales forecasts since the election of Donald Trump as president, new securities filings show.

The fresh, gloomy numbers are the latest blow to gun manufacturers since last November, when Trump’s election eliminated a key catalyst for gun sales in the US — panic buying on worries that a Democratic White House could clamp down on gun ownership.

FBI background checks for gun purchases have fallen more than 12 percent since the election.

“We are experiencing unprecedented decline in demand for ammunition and firearms following the presidential election,” Mark DeYoung, chief executive of Vista Outdoor, said May 11 when the maker of gun brands like Bushnell and Savage Arms lowered its 2018 forecast.
