Local psychiatrist weighs in on Dry January health benefits

Dry January is a newer trend where people are putting the bottle down for the month of January. Individuals are cutting out alcohol entirely as they kick off the start of a new year. The relatively new trend has swept across the U.S. and throughout Europe.

Dr. Amanda Kingston, assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Missouri said she believes this trend has been on the uptick because it coincides perfectly with a trend that has been going on for decades: New Year’s resolutions.

"I do think it ties it really well with the idea of New Year’s resolutions and kinda kicking off each new year on a healthy foot,” Kingston said. “It’s a time where a lot of people take stock of their eating habits, drinking habits, other behaviors they engage in."

Kingston said she has seen this trend pick up steam over the last two years, especially on social media. She said partaking in Dry January can have lasting positive impacts including, physical, mental, and behavioral health benefits.
