The Agency compared nearly 800 products with clear male and female versions from more than 90 brands sold at two dozen New York City retailers, both online and in stores.
Findings On average, across all five industries, DCA found that womens products cost 7 percent more than similar products for men. Specifically:
7 percent more for toys and accessories
4 percent more for childrens clothing
8 percent more for adult clothing
13 percent more for personal care products
8 percent more for senior/home health care products
The higher cost for womens items extends to all ages: a scooter marketed to little boys goes for $24.99 while an identical scooter (except for its pink color) sells for $49.99. Schick Hydro-Silk razor cartridges for women? $18.99. Schick Hydro-5 cartridges for men? $14.99. Mens jeans? $68. Identical womens jeans? $88.00. Personal services such as dry cleaning and haircuts are also consistently more expensive, as most women already know.

(113,130 posts)with packaging aimed at women and girls. I've used the cheaper stuff aimed at men for many, many years.
I'd advise all my sisters to look carefully at a lot of things out there. Paying extra for pink when the identical product is made in brown for a lot less is just plain nuts.
Maybe if we start boycotting (girlcotting) this garbage, they'll catch a clue about how we're onto them and won't be ripped off any more.

(9,801 posts)I always just assume it's more expensive because it's packaged for women. It annoys me that marketers expect me to fall all over something because it's pink. They can insult my intelligence, but I can and will refrain from buying their condescending packaged product.

(113,130 posts)My parents moved around a lot when I was a kid. Wherever we lived, apartment or house, there was always a pink room and a blue room. They took the blue room and I was left feeling like I was growing up in some monster's stomach.
I see any product marketed to women, I automatically think that either it's a dog that failed to sell to men or it's been dyed pink with the price jacked up.
