This was a Facebook post in response to my complaint about our Congress trying to make the procedure mandatory before an abortion.

Doesn't there have to be a medical reason for the procedure? Can't the woman refuse?

Who is planning to pay for these vaginal ultrasound and what does the consequence of not having a vaginal ultrasound in the 6-8 gestation be? What does the woman do who does not know they are pregnant? It is stupid, just more invasion into the privacy of women. Why not force anal ultrasounds on those proposing this bill, they think it is okay to force this on women, let's force something on them.

not all pregnant women. Not even close to all. Whoever said this is off the wall. A transvaginal ultrasound is invasive and can be very painful. They are only used to determine if the Dr suspects there may be something wrong with the fetus or pregnancy. No other reason.

Usually, if you think you are pregnant, the doc will do a bi-manual exam to determine what you look/feel like. Not sure what an ultrasound would show that would be different.

If you need an amniocentesis to check for genetic damage then they use an ultrasound on your belly to determine where the needle should go for the sample.

Only vaginal ultrasound I had was to check my ovaries for various things.

IMHO, the only reason for this procedure before an abortion is psychological torture of the woman.

i know of no woman that automatically had that done, on the contrary. i do not know one woman that had a problem in pregnancy to even need one. i did not with two children.

6. thank you! I must say I was confused. It's been a long, long time since I was last

pregnant and they didn't have them then anyway. I didn't think my daughters had them either in their pregnancies, but I certainly didn't ask. My dtr in law had in vitro due to her age when she first got pregnant and she never mentioned having one (and again, I don't ask, I think asking would be impolite).

I don't know the woman who wrote that. I was on a friend's Facebook page. He is an outspoken liberal and some of his "friends" are real doozies (repubs of course). I sure didn't like her "just get over it" attitude.

Well, anyway I did refute her and we'll see what happens...

not until much later in the pregnancy. at 6-8 weeks, there is not much that is developed enough to see anything, right or wrong, w the fetus.

about 20 weeks is the usual, i think. you know, when it is possible to tell what species you are even looking at. and those are NOT vaginal.

I was 6 weeks pregnant and started bleeding, so yeah, they checked it out to make sure everything was OK. I didn't have one with my daughter....oh, and these were government paid babies...hubby is in the Army, so they would have done that if they thought it was needed. Sorry that made me laugh.

That is NOT normal. Vaginal ultrasounds are not done unless problems are suspected, so no, all pregnant women do not get them. Most women get a routine ultrasound late in the first trimester, but is is across the abdomen, not inside the vagina. This is to check fetal growth, placenta placement, and confirm the estimated due date.

I once had a vaginal ultrasound for a problem that had nothing to do with pregnancy, and I can tell you it was very uncomfortable. I can't imagine undergoing one while pregnant.

With my first pregnancy, my doctor suspected an ectopic pregnancy. The doctor sent me straight to the hospital to have a transvaginal ultrasound. He was calling the surgeon to be ready when they confirmed the ectopic pregnancy. He was very concerned that I already had peritonitis due to the horrible infection and fever I had. The ultrasound was hideously painful, even though it was really medically necessary. If it is not medically necessary, calling it rape is not out of line. The technician doing the procedure was very apologetic about the "discomfort". She tried to be gentle and she was good, but it was not an easy procedure.

Fortunately, it was a normal pregnancy. I just had a massive urinary tract infection which required massive doses of antibiotics. However, now with all these new draconian anti-abortion laws, I could have been allowed to die in agony and never raise a family, because of these anti-women fanatics idiotic interpretations of the Bible. These anti-abortion people are evil.

To make this a more positive post, my pregnancy was normal (although the delivery was life threatening, but that is a whole other story) and that child is a great feminist and starts medical school in the fall!
