Because it is seriously fucking depressing to think that people here really do care so very little.

But then we're back to the rant about anti-feminist trolls on DU.

the fact that MRAs were given a dog bone in the form of that site whcih rhymes with "productionist." I really really try to think that Skinner thought the crap could be contained, but honestly, we all know better. They get over there, plan, and wait for the chance to pick off people they do not like like seabeyond.

Originally posted a couple things I've seen in the last week. HOF is supposed to be a safe-haven from all that crap, and I changed my mind about posting it.

Part of what I said: I couldn't agree with you more. Actively hostile to women is a sadly accurate term. There's a lot of stuff that I see that I can't believe isn't against the TOS (unless I'm reading it wrong?).

What always gets me, though, isn't the idiots making the comments. I figure I'm going to see them almost anywhere on the internet--there's only so many places that can really be free of them. What surprises me is the generally widespread support for them. I really thought when I joined this site that it would be less of a problem here. I know there's all sorts of misogyny among members of the democratic party, but I would think that it would be less well supported by others on a supposedly progressive site.

If anybody wants to see the original post, just click the permalink button and scroll down in case the "This post was edited" thing doesn't show up.

Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: I have never heard of anyone who becomes a prostitute just to avoid "getting a real job" I agree with the alerter... this is disgusting.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: I rather see someone debate this idiocy so I will let it stand
Juror #4 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: this 'it's preferable to getting a real job and actually working for a living' identifies poster as a complete jerk
Juror #5 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Disgusting is too kind of a description for this post
Juror #6 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given

and that liberalism meant concerns about social justice and equal rights. Yep, I had similar reactions when I first joined. I couldn't believe what I was seeing from people who claimed to be liberals. That they dress up their entitlement in sanctimony makes it all the more unpalatable.

I was a member of DU in the early 2000s, and this sort of stuff did not go on.

6. Trash thread
Sun Aug 10, 2014, 12:52 AM
Aug 2014

If there were productive, interesting conversations to be had, I'd be right there. What we have here is a "bait the feminist" contingent that never stops.

I see a thread I know is going to be trouble-- I trash it. I have no interest in a "debate" with idiots, but I most emphatically DO have an interest in debates with people who care, who are interesting, who have experience. If you use trash thread, that brings up threads that have been dropped-- ones that might actually be interesting. This is why the only person I have on ignore is a hysterical prolific poster, who thinks their sarcastic political anti-Obama OP's are cute.

I have a good friend who is a sex positive, bi-sexual feminist Libertarian. (the libertarian part -Ick)It's amazing the common ground we find. She knows my stance and my beliefs and I know hers. I was very proud of her at the pride parade wearing body paint. The actual ideology is NOT the same, but the spirit is.

Anyway if I don't trash immediately, I'll post my stance, which interestingly enough doesn't get much in the way of responses. I'm also trained to reflect: "why do you feel that way?" That either shuts people up or opens a conversation. I want to know why do you feel that way. And/or "is there a possibility that all factors have not been considered in this opinion? Reflective listening is a great technique either people will stop bullshitting and start thinking, or they'll derail the conversation-- because they got nothin'

Or "what an interesting point of view" although this is usually sarcastic.

Sun Aug 10, 2014, 08:26 AM

Relentless promotion of a poor quality of debate is a problem in other issues I care about, e.g. gun control. Poor quality threads thrive and good quality sinks.

16. I think so
Sun Aug 10, 2014, 10:30 AM
Aug 2014

Why waste time with people who are crazed, trolls, just want to attract attention, or who don't or won't look at different sides of issues. A simple "I understand what you're saying but this is how I feel on this issue" would make debate easier. I have my own hard lines, such as choice, and I cringe every time I see an anti-choice position on DU. It's like arguing with a creationist, since the anti-choice position is an emotional one, not a scientific one, so in those cases there not much to argue with.

Instead you have name calling (the one I find the funniest is "The purity police" what are we around here-- 13 years old?)

I look at threads, I see the sarcasm, the lack of information, or the deliberate ignoring of information, ad hominem arguments-- sometimes so convoluted they make no sense. And it's so easy to get caught up into it, it IS a little cathartic, but gets nowhere as far as making actual points.
