#EndFathersDay: Trolls being trolls, or “black propaganda” designed to tear apart feminism?

You all got the memo about #EndFathersDay fiasco, right – the phony “feminist” hashtag, seeded and spread by 4chan trolls, that aroused so much consternation on Twitter the other day, and that took in so many who’re already given to thinking the worst about feminism?

It would be nice if we could just dismiss this whole thing as trolls being trolls – no harm, no foul. But there’s a bit more to it than that.

For one thing, the troll campaign worked. At least on some people: While feminist writers quickly rushed in to point out that the whole thing was an antifeminist hoax, more than a few in the right-wing media were taken in utterly.

On the National Review Online, Molly Wharton warned that “Twitter anti-fatherists” were taking aim at a holiday that they said “glorifies rape, patriarchy, and child abuse.” The Washington Examiner railed against #EndFathersDay as “the latest ridiculous hashtag from the feminist outrage machine.”

On Fox News’ Fox & Friends, antifeminist author and “Princeton Mom” Susan Patton went further:

They’re not just interested in ending Father’s Day, they’re interested in ending men. …That’s really what they want.

And from MY experience with a deadbeat, there are plenty of fathers who are doing a fine job trashing their rights to be honored, without any assistance from feminists.

I found out later that Ex was trolling the MRA sites to justify his not paying child support...coincidence? I don't think so: just massive bad luck for me and the girls....

Feminists didn't froth at the mouth and hit themselves on TV about the end of father's day or shit up the internet in terror over the coming "stare rape" laws. The only people that looked bad as a result of the trolling was the MRAs that were stupid enough to latch on to what were, to anyone with a modicum of sense, obvious fakery.

You could condense the whole of either episode down to "MRAs: As dumb as you thought".

feminists are crazy man haters are the people that already thought that. Sure, it reinforced their dumbass POV, but everything reinforces their delusions. That barista that was twenty years younger than them not being willing to hand over her phone number at the first sign of a creepy leer is proof of the evil feminist conspiracy at work, as far as they're concerned. Meanwhile everyone that didn't think that has watched the MRAs work themselves into a fine lather over a joke image and a joke twitter feed.

I think it's more likely to push people away from MRAs than toward, especially given the way they act when it's revealed as a joke is more akin to a cult being reminded their immortal leader just keeled over than to people concerned about "stare rape" and an end to father's day.

As far as Fox goes, they'll forget The War on Father's Day next week when the scheduled coverage of the War on Christmas kicks off.

Could've been worse, considering how many here are eager to lap up and regurgitate as much anti-feminist swill as they possibly can.

political goal posts forever moving toward the right. These things, though ridiculous, do convince some people, and they change the conversation.

The fact that it was posted here is shameful. This should be one of the sites that consistently debunks all the anti-feminist, racist, homophobic crackpots that are out there. Instead, too many people here are carrying their water and kissing their feet. Shameful.

I don't think they are anywhere near a majority, but they have a medium for the voice for crazy talk, emotional projection, and generalized shit- stirring bullshit.

Meanwhile, feminists are still getting shit done around the world.--no matter what the 'I'm not a feminist' pop star de jour says or does. Frankly, I ran out of fucks to give on that one-- because there is always pushback for sounding like an idiot. Have at it.

This doesn't mean there isn't a hard road to equality, it just means we have to hear more crazy, and even more entitled assholes.

Dave did indeed have a very interesting point about 4Chan, and RWNJ trolls hijacking feminist discourse, etc.....one must wonder what else these trolls have done so far......K & R, and in fact, I've been planning on reposting this for a while now. Maybe I'll get around to it soon.
