Washington Post Column Says Women Should 'Stop Taking Lovers' To Prevent Violence

The bottom line is this: Married women are notably safer than their unmarried peers, and girls raised in a home with their married father are markedly less likely to be abused or assaulted than children living without their own father.

The original headline of the piece placed the onus on women and mothers in domestic violence situations, calling for them to "stop taking lovers" and marry their "baby daddies":

The authors claim that marriage "tames" men, the implication being that because men are less likely to abuse their biological children, women should lock down that engagement ring. "Marriage seems to cause men to behave better," Wilcox and Fretwell Wilson write. "That’s because men tend to settle down after they marry, to be more attentive to the expectations of friends and kin, to be more faithful, and to be more committed to their partners -- factors that minimize the risk of violence." Apparently, the responsibility rests on women to marry men and prevent them from becoming violent.

The piece acknowledges that there are married men and biological fathers who do abuse their wives and children, but focuses on how unmarried women can -- and should -- take themselves out of danger by getting hitched. The authors do not investigate other factors that may make never-married women more likely to be victims of domestic violence, like poverty and fear of homelessness. Instead, they tie women's safety to marriage without mentioning other economic or social factors.

Weren't there studies that marriage benefits the health of men but not women - and let's not forget -

Lots of women end up with lemons who just put on a good face. There ought to be lemon laws for husbands.

My wife was horribly abused in her first marriage by her then husband. What a steaming load of gerbil bollocks this column is.

Thanks for posting it.

has to include limiting their sexual options to whatever men decide is right for them. If a woman without a husband gets pregnant, she is not allowed to have an abortion. But certain male-dominated conservative political caucuses (I can't call 'em a party) don't want to pay for her birth control, either -- the easiest, most effective, least morally conflicted option.

So once they have accomplished those two things, the last thing that is left to them -- the men, the ones in control -- is for them to say, "No sex for you". Or more precisely, only heterosexual sex, sanctioned by the church, for the purposes of procreation... the only kind they actually approve of. For women, not themselves.

The "violence prevention" rationales have gained more popularity in the wake of Elliott Rodger, and going further back, to Muslims promised scores of virgins on the afterlife. The "If these young men could just get laid on a semi-regular basis, they'd put down their weapons" sort of premise.

Not a whole lot of personal responsibility in that line of testosterone-poisoned thinking.

I thought the WaPo couldn't get any misogynistic after George Will, but I was wrong. Bezos is driving that bus right off a cliff.

into marriage instead of telling men to stop their violence against women.

That is what they are saying. It is not ok to tell those who perpetrate the violence to stop, they'd rather tell the victims to sell themselves for some possible protection (which they themselves admit is not certain) or the victims can blame themselves.

Disgusting!
