Another day in Rape Culture

http://variety.com/2014/film/news/x-men-director-accused-of-sexually-abusing-teenage-boy-1201158645/

A young man who alleges Bryan Singer raped him when he was 17 years old has come forward.

According to the highly-explicit suit, the illicit activities started at a mansion in the Los Angeles area known as the M&C Estate, where principals of streaming video company Digital Entertainment Network, Marc Collins-Rector and Chad Shackley, lived. Shackley’s younger brother Scott was a classmate of Egan’s.

The court documents also claim that Collins-Rector molested Egan and threatened him with a firearm if he did not comply.

The victims lawyer says other victims will soon come forward. Yet once again, people say they are "suspicious" of the "timing" of the allegation. Rape victims should only come forward, one person insists, if they are "really suffering," because apparently one can be raped and not really suffer.

This particular victim recounts his suffering.
In an exclusive interview, Egan told The Daily Beast: “I didn’t know who to talk to, or how to deal with the demons eating away at me. Suicide absolutely went through my mind. I had a horrible time with drinking. If it hadn’t been for the support of my mother and family, I don’t know what I would have done.”

Yet there was an investigation by the FBI in 2000 surrounding this incident. Nor is it the first time Singer has been accused of raping minors.

This isn’t the first time Singer has been in trouble involving minors. In 1997, a 14-year-old extra from the thriller he directed entitled “Apt Pupil” accused Singer and others working on the film of forcing him and two other underage boys to get naked during a shower scene. The case was later thrown out for insufficient evidence.

Once again the victim is a liar or seeking a payday. Somehow the 25% of women and 5-10% of males raped are assaulted by ghosts, or just plain liars, since no rapist is ever guilty. While none of us reading these articles can know for sure if Singer is actually guilty, the response is identical to that which awaits every single rape victim who comes forward. April 18, 2014, a day like any other in rape culture.

When will DU start recognizing the serious nature of this issue and, implement a Zero Tolerance Policy toward the people who make light of the situation?

At least then, you bend over bacwards to post heartfelt apologies and self-deprecating schtick to make a public show how of chastened you are.

When it comes to nasty sniping at so-called "women's issues" however, I see you're guilt-free.

They all are, but when it seems to come from a random direction like this, it's so deeply disturbing.

My first hidden post came from linking to a feminist site that offering an alternate way of thinking about rape----it was satire, but it upset the jury. I had posted it twice before on DU2.

My second hidden post came from a comment regarding who does participate in rape culture. (not rape; rape culture) This one I expected, and it was actually an experiment of mine.

Those are my only 2 hides, in the going on ten years I've been here.

I bring this up, because I think in a lot of aspects, social media and on-line communication reflect society, which is why I'm heartened by so much feminist activity, and appalled at certain reactions to rape, alleged rape, statutory rape, etc.

This person who 'may have' assaulted kids can certainly be discussed without the disgusting victim blaming. Your post is an excellent example.

I had posted it in GD back on Thursday;

There's a lot to take in with this particular case as it goes along that makes it a little gray. Singer's long been the target of grief by people for being one of the few openly gay directors in Hollywood that does big films. But he also never made it easy on himself by getting involved in a whole lot of skeevy parties over the years.

The 2000 allegations were aimed at a lot of people at the party, but Singer was not included in it, which does introduce a bit of concern that it only comes up now.

The Apt Pupil stuff is kind of dicey in its own way, but it's the kind of situation that can get blown out of proportion since it can be viewed as problematic while also viewed as people were brought in to do a scene for a film, didn't really realize what they were signing on for (that was a rough film with nazis and the like) and then complained only to be replaced by older actors that looked young to achieve the same results. Claiming he was accused of raping minors for the scene in Apt Pupil is a bit of a stretch since that's not what he was accused of. He was accused of doing it for sexual gratification, not rape.

This not a pro or con post on my part, just a little more info.
