HuffPo Canada: McGill University's Feminist Campaign Is Pretty Damn Cool

Finding someone who believes in gender equality these days is probably just as easy as finding someone who likes to watch movies. And yet, even while people advocate these beliefs, they still don't want to be called feminists.

"There is a lot of negative criticism concerning the merits of feminism and what it represents. It is often seen as a privileged and elitist group, one that discounts and silences the voices of minorities," says second-year law student Aishah Nofal. There's also an association with feminism as an exclusively female and militant topic, leading some organizations to slyly refer to it as the other "F" word.

With a new photo campaign launched by McGill University's Faculty of Law's The Feminist Collective, Nofal, 25, says challenging this idea of what it means to be a feminist also means showcasing that feminism comes in all genders, races, and backgrounds.

"We want to reclaim the term, deconstruct the misconceptions attached to the term feminist, and demonstrate that feminism is something that is inclusive and does represent different voices," she says.

that effort will send a few heads spinning (those who proclaim to support women's equality but then spend all their time attacking feminism and feminists)...

But some times I have a difficult time embracing some members. Goddess help me to be more understanding and open hearted.
We are all in different stages of our lives and we have burdens we carry. I'm sorry I've been judgmental toward some people whom are just doing their best to express the exasperation of not feeling listened to or understood. It is a frustrating journey. I know the feeling, too.

It's the backlash RedQueen often talks about and it's happening everywhere. Feminism, in order to grow as a movement, had to let go of the cis-white, hetero, middle class women as her many "leaders" and embrace intersectionallity, which it has started to do with incredible results.

In a small way, part we can thank the MRA movement-- that toxic wasteland of bitterness and bile, because they tried to equate themselves as a kind off male feminist movement. There is no valid comparison. Like asking about a "international men's day"? What. The. Fuck. Read history.

We can thank Right wingers, for the barrage of attacks on women's rights.

We can thank idiots like Sarah Palin and Ann Coulter, who are, well idiots.

Mostly we can thank the feminists who never gave up, never gave in, kept the battle going, despite threats of rape and violence, despite being mocked constantly, despite the shying away from the label feminist, by women who support feminist values.

Those with Anti-women agendas Blamed feminism for just about every damn thing, apparently not realizing that there are healthy, positive and inclusive men's movements, who are strong feminist allies. Not realizing feminists are GBLT allies. Not realizing the movement wasn't dead, just doing a little internal restructuring.
