Commercials tend to show women in provocative poses no matter what product is being sold, so we decided to recreate three of them with men.

(12,051 posts)at the man who's the nerd, and then the female 'nerd' who replaces him. There's another trope!!! They've put black eyeglasses on a very attractive woman and think she is just as ugly as the male in the commercial! Come on, there are plenty of unattractive women, why didn't they use one??? Why? BECAUSE EVEN IN A PARODY OF ADS TO SHOW HOW SEXIST THEY ARE, THEY STILL HAVE TO USE ONLY ATTRACTIVE WOMEN!

(42,443 posts)They have a young demographic, so it opens no eyes
Even the motorcycle ad parodies I've seen recently used average looking or over weight men and put them in the parodies of motorcycle poses.
Perhaps the target it the average male-- but they'd be too busy looking at the female models to give a shit.

(38,166 posts)that the men were of average size or overweight & not some unattainable standard for most men. It didn't occur to me that they did that thinking the average male would get the message better than if they used buffed out guys. What do you think?
In the end, that'll be the day when they put an average sized or overweight woman in an ad.

(42,443 posts)Is they minimializes women's sexuality, plus they're heteronormative. Women like an attractive male or female, (putting aside the huge issue of indoctrination in "what's attractive" with societal norms) yet repeatedly, theses "comparison" use a less attractive male,-- all the way to say, Feman and the "Walk a mile in her Shoes" organizations. (not really comparable, but all I could think of off hand)
I think objectifying men is the only way these type of ads CAN be effective. Interestingly, one complaint from men's groups is that men are often presented as buffoons in the media. So here is one supposedly making an attempt at battling sexism-- yet reinforces it from different directions. The guy looks like an idiot, but not a sexy idiot as the woman does.
