TOKYO —

A Japanese budget airline has flown into rough air over its decision to outfit flight attendants in revealing mini-skirts, drawing criticism that it could invite sexual harassment.

Skymark Airlines came under fire from the cabin crew’s labor union, which said the super-short skirt—with a distinctively swinging ‘60s look—barely covers wearers’ thighs.

“We’re concerned that the design of this uniform may cause problems,” including sexual harassment, the Japan Federation of Cabin Attendants said in a statement.

“The airline is saying the uniform is meant to attract more customers, but this shows the company is treating women like a commodity,” it added.

1. Well, I'm not being told to wear them, BUT harassment is cause by people, not by the clothes worn

And that's my opinion about that.

Being told to wear skirts that make employees feel uncomfortable would be a different conversation.

But I don't like the framing of the "concern" and the way it places "cause" on the uniform and the wearers, rather than on the perpetrators of harassment.

4. This comes around the same time that Massachusetts passed

a law banning the surreptitious taking of photos of women's panties, a practice known as 'upskirting'. There are numerous websites devoted to this particular practice.

What struck me was that we've sank so low as a species that we need laws to remind men not to stare at or photograph women's private parts. Sad.

5. It's a small Airline

One hopes those flight attendants don't have to bend over, and I'll bet you a million dollars they either have no male flight attendants, or there is no mini-skirt equivalent.

6. Asian airlines are notoriously sexist. Singapore Air in particular comes to mind.

Unless you're considered gorgeous, you'll never work as a flight attendant for them.
