(42,443 posts)The recent Bored at Baker posting targeting a member of our community sharply illustrates the damage that disrespectful, irresponsible, and anonymous comments in online forums can have for the person targeted and for our community as a whole. While we defend the right to freedom of expression and vigorous debate on our campus, anonymous online or other personal, harassing and threatening language is not protected or defensible and has no place in any community-let alone the Dartmouth family we all hold so dear.
Once we were notified that the police had completed their investigation, we
acted swiftly to identify the individual that (anonymously) authored the post. We have identified the individual and are taking appropriate actions under the College disciplinary system. We want to assure you that we are doing all that we can to support those impacted by this and any other posting. If you or someone close to you needs support or a space to talk, I encourage you to reach out to the many resources available including Counseling, the Undergraduate Deans Office, the SAAP coordinators, OPAL, and Safety & Security.
At his Inauguration, President Hanlon challenged us to consider, with every action we take on this campus, whether we are strengthening our community or undermining it. Anonymous post targeting individuals, public harassment, threatening behavior and physical and sexual violence corrode the heart of our community and are unacceptable. At its heart, this is a community that cares for one another. Let's rise to President Hanlon's challenge and reflect our highest values in all that we do.
Sincerely,
Charlotte Johnson
Dean of the College

The perp's approach to the student as a "fuck target" to be hunted down and "shared with the pack"
is as chilling and dehumanizing as it gets -- It reeks of sociopathy.

(17,658 posts)What does breed this level of assholedom? One of my biggest forms of old-fogeyism is that I just cannot believe the level to which misogyny has sunk in this country. As much as we guys wanted to get laid then, even the worst would never have come out with this kind of crap. I'm thinking elitism and entitlement must play a role, and the contempt they engender. They really do seem to get off on humiliation, anyway -- real or fantasized.

(42,443 posts)I have to agree. There is no doubt an element of classism, which is not to say this doesn't happen on other campuses, but this is Dartmouth, the crème de la crème of our education system. Where leaders are groomed.
And I detect a certain ennui in his little porn poem, no passion, just sexual entitlement. Very disturbing.
malthaussen
(17,658 posts)Ironically, the only porn that tries to sell passion -- or that the participants have a relationship -- is labelled "female friendly." The bulk is as erotic as watching grass growing. That's not counting the large amounts which are frankly about abuse and humiliation.
Wasn't always that way. Lots of variation, of course, but when porn became "mainstream" in the 70's, a lot of it made attempts at art, humor, story, and projecting the idea that sex was a nice thing to do, not an exercise between strangers who couldn't care less about each other. I have this wild-ass theory that it is part of Their ongoing attempt to divide and rule, to set men against women, to depersonalize love and force us all into tight, individual boxes in which we can trust or care about no one. Makes it so much easier to instill the fear necessary to keep us in thrall. And probably reflects Their own world-view. (Whoever They are, of course)
That entitlement. Disturbing indeed, and not just the sexual entitlement, but the generalized entitlement. Paul Ryan put it best in his high school yearbook: "I want what I want when I want it."

(42,443 posts)I don't download or watch entire movies, but I can't honestly criticize what I know nothing about. The areas of porn I find disturbing are the increasing bizarre fetishism-- the kind that can cause harm, the commercial aspect of it,a the absolutely blatant racism, and the popular "teenage slut" and variations of that theme.
I can watch a certain amount of porn even if I disagree with the pornography industry because it's NOT erotic. Very little sensuality, it focuses a lot on degradation. I get bored fast. I went through some male gay porn recently and found some of the same aspects of degradation, and focus on underage, but not nearly in the amount of hetero, or even Gay women. (The largest demographic that purchases porn of Gay women are young males, the porn industry responded accordingly)
It's too bad really. Pornography doesn't have to degrade or objectify-- it could simply tell sexual adventure story. But the way society is set up, is people pay to watch sexual humiliation, with women bearing the brunt of it. It causes great harm to the sexual imagination in my opinion.
I was reading some old, but decent erotica recently and some horror porn and thought now this is what genre writing is about. (Horror porn cracks me up--in that darkly ironic way. It also doesn't try to hide misogyny.)
Even "The Story of O" while it doesn't tell a moral tale, tells a story of a women who tried to rule her sexuality through submission, which ended sadly in her case.
Apparently we can't replicate stories, or usually, even eroticism in movies.
malthaussen
(17,658 posts)... as he was working out an aesthetic ideal based on the beauty of pain and submission. Or maybe he really was just writing for the kicks.
I used to think that indulging the more beastly imagination would effectively sublimate the need for action, but I am starting to drift away from that view as the porn becomes more violent, more misogynistic, and more pointless. If it turns out that indulging actually stimulate the need to act out, I'm going to be very intellectually humiliated, indeed. And your point about limiting imagination comes into play here: if that is all there is (what self-respecting he-man would watch "female friendly" erotica anyway?), then what does one have on which to base his own imagination or fantasy? And to some extent at least, we do base our actions on our prior expectations. Which might lead us to wonder just to what extent Dartmouth Dude is simply a little prick, and how much he reflects a conventional attitude of some subset of our culture.

(110,159 posts)The female member of the Class of 2017 targeted in the post alleges that the posts author sexually assaulted her last fall, but that she chose not to report the assault to either Hanover Police or Safety and Security.
*
Upon hearing the initial news that the police would not prosecute the author of the post, the target of the post decided to bring the post to public attention on Feb. 4. She posted a screen shot and a description of her experience in the Class of 2017 Facebook page. I cant do this alone, she said of her decision to post in the Facebook group. We cant have a culture where its okay to harass me and call me names like that. I thought I should address this to my classmates, so I did.

The name-calling on Bored at Baker began in November, she said, with anonymous online posters identifying her by name and labeling her Choates whore, as well as commenting on her intelligence. There are currently 21 posts on the website from between November and Jan. 10 that use the phrase. All posts referencing her name or initials have been deleted. I talked to the deans office because I was really depressed about it and upset and mortified that someone would be saying those hurtful things, and they told me there was nothing they could do, she said. I had to stay at Dicks House because of how I was feeling.

The female member of the Class of 2017 said the Jan. 10 post stood out from the others. The post advocated providing the target with alcohol and assaulting her. The student body has reacted passionately to the Bored at Baker post. Panhellenic Council, along with the presidents of each of the eight sororities that it represents, and the Interfraternity Council sent campus-wide emails condemning the post. As women on campus, we are only as protected and safe as the least safe member on campus, Panhellenic Council president Eliana Piper said.
he rapes her, then continues to taunt, mock, humiliate and insult her. and there is little or nothing they can do at the university? really? i think not. decide what is important. not like the evidence is not there to see the harassment.

(29,742 posts)but generally, and in this case I'd say definitely, women have MORE to be afraid of in not reporting it to the cops.
Of course she may, as you say, be damaged in some way, and as a rape survivor myself, I'm in no way suggesting,
that she's in any way more "culpable" for not reporting it, it just frustrates me.
FWIW, I was raped by a stranger at about her age on my first day in a new city and I went straight to the cops.
They never found the sick little bastard, but I did feel better and more empowered for having done so.
