Sydney University staff have successfully shut down campus as part of their ongoing enterprise bargaining campaign today (March 26). The two-day strike, by members of the National Tertiary Education Union and Community and Public Sector Union, is continuing tomorrow.
The university administration is trying to drastically cut conditions and refuse the union's wage claims. The administration is trying to remove limits on casualisation, and undermine academic freedom and the unions ability to organise on campus.
The success of the strike came despite repeated unprovoked attacks by police on strikers.
Outrageously, this industrial dispute between the administration and the staff union has now resulted in several violent police attacks. With no provokation, peaceful protestors engaging in legal picket activity have been violently assaulted on at least two occasions.

(62,325 posts)Has there ever been a time when the entire world was subjected to the exact same policies, and to enforce them, a Global Army of Robo Cops indistinguishable both in their brutal, militarized actions against peaceful protestors, and in their 'uniforms'?
I think it is going to take a lot more than courageous protesters like these in different countries, to stop this Global terror against the people.

(62,325 posts)I remember when we were following the OWS protests all over the world and I was struck by the fact that the robo cops in France, Germany and here and elsewhere were all wearing the same Orwellian gear.
I used to be able to identify the French, Irish, British cops, and ours of course, by their uniforms. But when they were all beating up OWS protesters, I couldn't tell from just looking at the photos, which country I was reading about.
And then I had a really radical, and probably DANGEROUS thought (lol). I wondered who got the contract for all that 'riot gear'? There is money in suppressing the people exercising their right to free speech. And why not? It's a dirty job to outfit the world's police, but someone has to do it.
I never did find out who supplies all that gear.
