STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Staten Island houses of worship and other non-profits are forming a united front in their efforts to provide immediate relief and assistance with long-term issues, such as housing, faced by victims of Hurricane Sandy.
Staten Island Clergy Leadership is sponsoring roundtable dialogues on Interfaith Disaster Relief and Recovery each Wednesday at the Unitarian Church of Staten Island in New Brighton, with this weeks meeting slated for 11 a.m.
The meetings not only have attracted many Island houses of worship, including some that are active in the Building Bridges Coalition of Staten Island, but non-faith based non-profits including the Red Cross, City Harvest, the New York State Nurses Association, the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, Where to Turn and Occupy Sandy. Representatives from FEMA have been attending the meetings.
Peter Gudaitis, president of the National Disaster Interfaiths Network, urged the houses of worship and the other non-profits to approach politicians as a united group when they make a request.
