Pierre police use "less-lethal" ammo to arrest 18-year-old in standoff

An 18-year-old man faces charges after an hour-long standoff in the early dark of Friday near McDonald’s in Pierre that ended after he was hit with “less-lethal” rounds fired by law officers.

Pierre Police Capt. Bryan Walz released the man’s name later Friday morning: Russell Hanson of Pierre.

He’s in the Hughes County Jail expected to face charges involving aggravated assault on law enforcement officers and underage drinking, Walz said.

It was a tense hour early Friday that could have turned out much worse and it involved the unusual deployment of “less-lethal” rounds by law enforcement officers in Pierre.
