Home Alone 2 actress who played pigeon lady says Christmas will be very dark for her and others living aloneBrenda Fricker, who portrayed the sweet pigeon lady who befriended young Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) on his trip to New York, recently revealed that Christmastime can be very dark for people who, like her, live on their own.
Though shes hanging on like everyone else during coronavirus, the actress, 75, told The Ray DArcy Show on Monday: I think I would be lying if I said that it would be a nice and happy Christmas, because Im one of those people, Im old and I live alone, and its going to be very dark, you know?

But Christmas isnt the most difficult time to be on ones own, said the actress. What I do find very difficult is New Years Eve ... all the bells are ringing and you have no one to turn around to, hug or smile at ...

(120,393 posts)I'm old, living along and I'm fine with not doing Christmas. There's nothing magic about the particular date of December 25 (it was chosen as Christmas only to supersede existing pagan festivals); I can celebrate later when it's safe. I'm also fine with not celebrating New Year's Eve, since I haven't in years anyhow. I'll be glad to see the end of 2020 but I don't have to go to a party to commemorate its departure. I guess I don't get people who can't tolerate being alone.

(7,467 posts)it's not hard to understand. I'm an introvert, I get recharged by being alone, extroverts are the opposite.

(8,513 posts)She doesn't like being around others very much, so life isn't all that much different for her. I'm usually good with being alone, but I do enjoy my family.
My daughter-in-law and grandsons stopped by yesterday to pick up my gifts for the boys. We chatted in the driveway for a little bit, all wearing masks and keeping distance. Right before they left I said to my four-year-old grandson, "aura hugs!" and we did that. Then when his mom turned to make sure his baby brother was fine in his car seat, my grandson darted to me and hugged my legs and then darted back and jumped in the truck. My heart just absolutely melted.
Practically crying just remembering it.

(8,513 posts)It's never meant more to me than it has the last four years. Well, a little over four years. I'm thankful for each and every one of you.
(Sorry for being all mushy and stuff, but I really do mean this.)
Happy Holidays to all

(7,606 posts)I used to decorate, cook, gift wrap, clean up and put it all away, etc..... Been there, done that, for so many years, it's kind of relaxing to not have to do any of it! Just listen to Christmas music, text and zoom my friends and family, eat cookies for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack! No one to tell me otherwise!

(8,513 posts)I sure can't eat sugar like I used to be able to do. Getting older sucks in that respect.
I feel kind of weird that I've basically already done the whole Christmas thing. Everything is where it's supposed to go, except for the money gift for one grandson who said he'd stop by, but I doubt he'll get here before the weekend.
I have been trying to think of something special to do, like getting a special treat, but I've been "special treating" myself for months, and if I don't stop I'm going to have a lot of trouble fitting into my clothes.

It is true, however, that most people live off the fantasies of others.
I, for the most, do well in work relationships, preferably the short term ones.
I enjoy silent days. Oh silent night is every night for me. No Christmas extras, well, I did pull out my lava lamp. It kind of looks like a tree.
