Loners

Hello everyone! I just wanted to check in and see how my fellow loners are doing.
I like to think of us as a group of wanderers or nomads. Each on a journey of our own, but stopping by the campfire every now and then to tell stories of our travels.
As I add a log to the fire and the sparks dance off into the night, i'm gonna pull up a folding chair and reflect.
Ive finished physical therapy recently and am recovering well from my accident. Insurance companies are a pain and I'm not entirely convinced that they weren't stalking me for a little while ..
Hopefully they will settle soon and I can get another car, even though I really don't like driving anymore.
Golden rods, red buds, and dog woods are in full bloom here in the sticks. It's a beautiful display and as it rains I wish it would wash the stain out of the white house. (Collective sigh goes here)
I'd like to hear some of your adventures from this year if anyone would like to share. I long for the ocean. I wish I could hike the trails and do some kayaking. Such a dreamer's toil...

(10,002 posts)Springs springing here. My long used solitary hiking trails haven't been as solitary lately. Looks like further afield is in my future.

I'm sooooooo glad spring is here. Not looking forward to the storms though.

(10,002 posts)I just saw it.
It's awesome! (Thanks littlemissmartypants!)
Now we'll have to come up with something uniquely lonely to pin at the top of the group!
We'll start the million liberal loners' March!
Watch out!

(2,005 posts)I think it was in late Dec or early Jan my daughter mentioned that she was making a trip to the UK with her oldest son to get him settled in a dorm where he would be taking a short course, in brewing no less. I had been to England and Scotland several decades ago, and always wished I could have made it to Ireland, and back to the UK. (I have a friend in the Midlands of England that I've been in touch with since we were both in high school and wanted to see her again also.)
So kind of out of the blue I asked daughter if I could go with them, and could we extend the trip to include Ireland. She was up for it, so we did kind of a whirlwind tour of Edinburgh, Dublin, Wales and England in 16 days. I love it over there, so it was an awesome trip. Over much too soon but at least I did make it, which I honestly had figured I never would at this point.
It was a lot of 'humanity' to be around for the long, 10 hr flight there and back, plus in airports, on trains etc. But we stayed in Airbnbs , so we had our own space to kind of recover in, in the evenings, as we moved around the country.
Just been back about 2 weeks, so life is starting to get back to the 'normal', welcome, peaceful and quiet routine. So glad I didn't just stay in my home nest this time, and went for the adventure. I used to do that when I was young, but it's so easy to just fall into kind of an inertia as I get older I guess. (heading for 69 this year)
I hope others here have had some fun adventures as well!

I'd have to be sedated to fly that far I think, but Ireland is also on my bucket list.

(2,005 posts)It was long to be sure, no way around that. (A friend suggested stopping in New York overnight and breaking up the trip but that had no appeal for me) We flew on Virgin and when booking it I told my daughter I wanted a direct flight, so we saved about 4 hours that way. The thought of that long trip was one of the things that made me avoid going all these years.
Things are better than the last time I went a long distance like this. Now each seat back has a video screen and a whole library of movies, both recent and older, tv shows, games, music etc. So that helped to eat up a lot of time. And it seemed like there were endless food breaks--snacks, dinner, snacks, dessert, breakfast snacks, etc etc. A lot of diversion. I felt like a kindergartner that the teachers were trying to keep occupied, lol.
I've never been able to sleep much if at all on planes, so that didn't help. But in the end it was totally worth it. If you ever get the chance, go for it!! I may have to go back again before too long!
