My family and I were supposed to be at Bondi Beach earlier in the evening. We were late because my daughter fell asleep in the car and I was with my parents.
That small delay - so ordinary it barely registered - placed us behind the gunmen instead of ahead of them.
My brother was there. He was on duty, volunteering for community security. Twenty minutes before the attack, his commander moved him from the bridge where the shooters would later take position.
--snip--
Australians around the country were shocked, but many in the Jewish community were not. Jews have seen this movie before. Allegedly inspired by ISIS, the terrorists did not target the Australian government, they targeted Jews - families, children, even Holocaust survivors.

(7,548 posts)get this desperate and carry out such an atrocity, with the full expectation they may die in the process?
Try not to use emotionally loaded words that stop any conversation, like 'terrorism', 'Isis', 'Islam', etc
Unless the surviving son opens up about the reasons, any conjecture about antisemitism is premature.
I've seen a lot of people talk about this since it happened, but little understanding of the reasons, and no suggestions as to stop it happening again, beyond some punitive and widespread measures.

(55,891 posts)You come in here and dictate what can and can't be, and how anti-Semitism must be discussed? Seriously?
FROM the BBC (hardly a pro-Jewish, and definitely not a pro-Israel source)
They allege the pair "meticulously" planned the attack for months and, two days prior to the shooting, visited Bondi for reconnaissance.
One video - taken on one of their mobile phones in October - is described as showing the men sitting in front of an image of an Islamic State group (IS) flag.
They are heard making statements about their motivations for the attack and condemn "the acts of 'Zionists'", police say.
Naveed Akram is also "recorded appearing to recite, in Arabic, a passage from the Quran".

FROM PBS:
Police said a video found on Naveed Akram's phone shows him with his father expressing "their political and religious views and appear to summarise their justification for the Bondi terrorist attack."
The men are seen in the video "condemning the acts of Zionists" while they also "adhere to a religiously motivated ideology linked to Islamic State," police said.
Video shot in October shows them "firing shotguns and moving in a tactical manner" on grassland surrounded by trees, police said.

This is NOT new.
They attacked Bondi Beach because it was full of Jews. It is that simple. The Chanukkah celebration was a soft target.
I will remind you again, THIS IS THE JEWISH GROUP!
Why are you trying to pretend it is something other than what it clearly is?

(7,548 posts)That is exactly the angry reactions I was referring to, no desire to understand why, no desire to make the next similar incident not happen.
As an Australian who watched the shootings happen in real time on the day, I have every reason to comment on it.
In this forum or any other.
If that is a problem or you, see a moderator.
I'm happy to see my comments disappear if this is a closed shop.

(55,891 posts)...you come into the JEWISH GROUP, make demands on HOW the discussion should happen.
In this forum or any other.
No, you do not. The Jewish Group, while open to all, is a safe space for Jews. Kneecapping how a discussion should take place is not a discussion at all.
The people on Bondi Beach were murdered for the "crime" of being Jews!
There are no moderators, haven't been for YEARS, but there are hosts. I am one. Therefore, I am blocking you from further "discussion" in this group.
