literally "head of the year" is the Jewish New Year. The biblical name for this holiday is Yom Teruah (יוֹם תְּרוּעָה, Yōm Tərūʿā, lit. "day of shouting/blasting" . It is the first of the Jewish High Holy Days (יָמִים נוֹרָאִים, Yāmīm Nōrāʾīm, "Days of Awe" , as specified by Leviticus 23:2325,[1] that occur in the late summer/early autumn of the Northern Hemisphere. Rosh Hashanah begins a ten-day period of penitence culminating in Yom Kippur, as well as beginning the cycle of autumnal religious festivals running through Sukkot and ending in Shemini Atzeret.
Rosh Hashanah customs include sounding the shofar (a hollowed-out ram's horn), as prescribed in the Torah, following the prescription of the Hebrew Bible to "raise a noise" on Yom Teruah. Its rabbinical customs include attending synagogue services and reciting special liturgy about teshuva, as well as enjoying festive meals. Eating symbolic foods, such as apples dipped in honey, hoping to evoke a sweet new year, is an ancient tradition recorded in the Talmud.[2]
Rosh Hashanah occurs 163 days after the first day of Passover, and thus is usually (but not always) determined by the new moon closest to the autumnal equinox.
Rosh Hashanah meals usually include apples dipped in honey to symbolize a sweet new year;[49] this is a late medieval Ashkenazi addition.

(56,415 posts)A radio stations program was slated to present a segment of music by Les Browns Orchestra. Before the days programming was finalized, however, it was decided to have a Yom Kippur program instead. Les Browns name was scratched out, and Yom Kippur was written in where LesBrowns name had been scratched out. But the announcer that was to introduce the program came on much later, and only read what had been left for him to read. And so, the public was made aware of: and now, the dance music of Yom Kippurs orchestra!
My dad was a beginning journalist back then, and he saved me a copy of that announcement, along with some other famous on-air gaffes of the day.

(1,999 posts)It's been a very difficult end of the year for me, and I'm ready for the new one.
Spent the morning at a cellphone repair shop. Still need to recover data from my account, and right now don't have my contacts to send holiday wishes to several friends and family.
On the bright side, I can get into my DU account! And I do have the address and contact info for the couple who invited me for a holiday meal tonight.
L'Shana Tova to my DU family!
