Wishing a Happy Healthy Sweet New Year, 5783
To all!
Anyone have any special plans or traditions?
My Jewish boss gives all (3-5) employees a round challah with raisins, a tradition her mother or grandmother started many years ago. I usually order from the same bakery, and give one to a neighbor, one to a friend. This year I got a few from trader Joe's to give, along with a kosher turkey breast I will cook tomorrow. I also cook tzimmes, and a vegetable medley, which I usually package in portions, give some to a few lucky recipients, and have a few more meals myself. Freeze the carcass and use it to make some kosher turkey soup.
I went apple picking last weekend, a new tradition, and have a good assortment. I thought I'd do a brown Betty or cobbler, and also apple sauce to freeze for Chanukkah, easy enough except for peeling and coring the apples. I had thought I might bake one of my mother's holiday desserts. She made a great honey cake, and rugelach and teiglach with unusual dough. Haven't made any of them since she passed 6 years ago. I made her hamentashen at Purim and it was a lot of work! But it tasted as I remember.
I belong to a synagogue that's about 35 minutes away, and I'm quite involved. I attend services regularly on Saturday morning. We will have services both Monday and Tuesday, starting at 9 am. I will be a greeter as folks arrive, so I'll need to leave my house by 8 am. The Synagogue will have a luncheon after services on Monday, and a friend has invited several of us for Tuesday lunch.
I got a new frock, an off-white long knitted jacket with pockets, which I will wear over whatever dress I'm wearing. I remember getting a new dress for the holidays every year when I was growing up. I don't follow that tradition, but sometimes use the holidays as an excuse get something new. The weather's turned cooler, so I look forward to wearing it.
Again, May the coming year bring health, happiness, and peace.
Shalom
