Wiccan prisoners in B.C. cursed by the federal government

Just a day after Corrections Canada issued a request for a proposal for a Wiccan chaplain to provide services to Wiccan inmates in B.C. prisons, Public Safety Minister Vic Toews nixed the request amid concerns over “the appropriate use of taxpayer dollars.”

The minister’s office also said it was not consulted before the tender was posted and that it will not proceed until after a review.

“Religious freedom is a paramount value in Canadian society,” Julie Carmichael, director of communications for Toews, said in an email.

“However, the government is not convinced all services offered through the chaplaincy program reflect an appropriate use of taxpayer dollars.”
