AZ Supreme Court Gives Christians a License to Discriminate Against Gay Couples

https://friendlyatheist.patheos.com/2019/09/17/az-supreme-court-gives-christians-a-license-to-discriminate-against-gay-couples/

The Arizona Supreme Court just gave Christian business owners permission to discriminate against same-sex couples — and possible interracial ones — in the name of religion. While the U.S. Supreme Court hasn’t yet weighed in on the legality of faith-based bigotry in public spaces, this case was limited to the state constitution and is therefore outside the purview of SCOTUS.

It was a 4-3 decision, tipped in that direction by two additional conservative judges recently installed by Republican Gov. Doug Ducey.

This case involved a company called Brush & Nib Studio, which makes custom wedding invitations. It’s not like a same-sex couple asked owners Breanna Koski and Joanna Duka to provide products for their celebration; instead, fearing the possibility that might happen, Koski and Duka wanted immunity from trouble in advance because Phoenix has an ordinance banning anti-gay discrimination in public places. An appeals court unanimously told them absolutely not. But the Ducey-packed Supreme Court ruled the other way.

Yay, religious privilege. The freedom to discriminate.

should advertise it. Businesses that discriminate should be required to include that in all ads and post a sign on the door. Let customers decide where to spend their money.

then all states will follow suit. Dark times. But yes, I think states and municipalities should then require businesses to disclose who they won’t serve. In the digital age, these types of things tend to backfire and market may actually help equality.

The court has been packed with religious assholes. All we can hope for is consumer boycotts now.

Negative on-Line reviews are a tool victims of discrimination lacked twenty years ago. Saying that business owners “hate gays” might not fly, but saying “poor service,” “rude staff,” and “breaks or alters agreements” are things small business owners don’t want spread around.

Next up, voter registrars can refuse to register minorities and women...especially if they don't like the look of them.
