4. What color were their heads? (I couldn't quite tell from the photo.)

Turkey vultures have reddish heads. Black vultures have grey heads.

Turkey vultures are very interesting. They uniquely 'food-shop' by both sight and smell; the other New World vultures (such as the black vulture) hunt by sight alone. In forested areas, they are out of luck with that. So, they often watch out for turkey vulture activity, and will follow them to their scent-found meal.
