AR7-survival rifle...

The pack rifle thread made me think of this.

Anybody have any experience with these? Looks like they're made by Henry now. Is it a decent plinker? Worth the money or a piece of junk now?

1. I used to own one, always took it hiking/camping with me.

It's really cool, because the entire rifle breaks down to fit in the plastic butt-stock. Supposedly you could even submerge it in water and it would be okay, but I never tried. But yeah, you could just tie it to your pack and let it dangle, without needing a cumbersome holster or anything, or worrying about the barrel scraping the ground or anything like when climbing over fallen tree trunks or other obstacles on the trail.

Perfect for killing whistle-pigs or other small rodents, or just plinking at cans or whatever, but not very accurate past 50 yards or so.

The only reason I got rid of it was a co-worker really wanted it and had a barely-used laptop to trade in exchange, so I took him up on it. Might get myself another one some day, or something like it, as it was a pretty neat little rifle to shoot.

4. No, Idaho native most all of my life.

These little creatures are actually a lot smaller than groundhogs, but they are everywhere out in the southern Idaho desert.

5. Buy a Ruger...

They are offering a take-down 10/22 in stainless. You have the availability of 25+ round mags, a ton of aftermarket parts and it makes the AR-7 look and feel like junk. You'll pay twice as much, but you get what you pay for.

6. While I have a henry AR-7 myself, and am happy with it...

...and I don't plan on getting rid of it, I have to agree that I think you're better off going with the new 10/22 take down. I've heard nothing but good things about it, and while it's take down size is still a bit larger than the AR-7, the advantages of the 10/22 platform make it worth it. It also comes with a nice carrying case.
