Remember Freespace? Well, come see what you've been missing.
Does anyone remember the old Volition space combat simulator Freespace from the late 90s? If you haven't played it recently (or at all), you might want to try checking it out.
Three years after the sequel was released, Volition released the game's source code to the fan community, and a legion of talented coders, modelers, level designers, writers, and artists have been using it to bring the game into the 21st century.
Changes to the code now allow for ingame cutscenes, cloaking, commanding capital ships, and a host of other features not originally available with the 1999 code. Graphics have been drastically improved and optimized. Multiplayer has been revived.
That's not even mentioning the heart of the community--fan-made story add-ons and ship packs. In addition to the host of Freespace universe mods, total conversions for Babylon 5, BSG, Wing Commander, and MechWarrior are either currently in production or have been released to some degree.
Long story short--if you haven't seen Freespace in years or at all, go see what you've been missing. $5 on GOG, with the Source Code Project material available for free at the community's core: http://www.hard-light.net/forums
