▶️ Tawny Frogmouth Chick at the Saint Louis Zoo
This tawny frogmouth chick hatched on Nov. 2, 2013 at the Saint Louis Zoo's Bird House. This video follows her growth through her first 26 days. The baby bird is being cared for by the Zoo's keeper staff. While it is ideal for the parents to raise their own chicks whenever possible, some first time parents don't always know what to do, so keepers will step in to help rear the chick. Frogmouths are carnivorous birds and zookeepers feed her small mice and insects.
The parents came to St. Louis from Australia in July 2013. The Saint Louis Zoo, Sea World Orlando and the Tawny Frogmouth Species Survival Plan collaborated with Australian partners to bring 12 new founder animals to the population in U.S. zoos. The adult birds came from the Darling Downs and Adelaide zoos in Australia. All of the birds were captive born or brought to the Australian zoos as orphaned chicks that could not be released back into the wild. It is hoped that this inter-regional collaborative effort will result in a more sustainable North American population.
