question everything

"Everything is electronic and requires more repair"

Said the KIA mechanic.

I wrote here, below, how I could no
loner get Sirius which came with my 2014 KIA Soul and the conclusion was that I needed a new Audio Head. $1,000.

But, it affected other functions: on occasions not being able to change FM stations and taking longer for the first screen to "agree" to abide by the rules. Several days ago I get into my car in a parking lot, just turned it on and... putting it in Reverse did not give me the rear camera. As I was driving to another section of the mall, the screen came back.

These have been on and off. So today when I finally took it to the dealer and reported these he agreed that they are all connected with the above comment.

We have been keeping cars for 8, 10, 15 years and never had such problems.

On occasions I read in the car columns about people liking their old cars and the replies often are that these old high miles lack the new safety features..

Really all I want is a mode of transportation that takes me from point A to point B in a reliable and safe mode.

Volkswagen has had no end of issues with their "infotainment" systems that integrate a gazillion functions - including the four that anyone needs.

3. My five year old Kia hasn't had a single problem, nothing, zip, it is about to turn 100,000 miles.

But the way that I am, as long as it runs and stops, when I ask it to, all of the doors could fall off and I would continue to drive it. If the entertainment electronics go funky, I won't worry about it. I do like the backup camera, but I can still turn my head.

The thread does bring something to mind that I had about forgotten about: When my wife and I were young, we bought a new Opel wagon, after about one year, the gas gauge quit working. Instead of fixing it, we would note our mileage on a piece of paper every time we filled up. We knew how many miles we got out of a tankful. We drove that car for two more years and never ran out of gas.

second car. Barely 16,000 miles.

Consumer Reports did not have enough words to praise it at the time.

Fast forward to CR car issue of this year. In the used cars section the only Kia Soul to avoid is... 2014.

About a gas gauge: more than 60 years ago my dad bought a 1956 VW beetle. The only one that he could afford. It did not have a fuel gauge! So on occasions he would stick a yardstick to look at the level of fuel. A classmate one asked me whether it wouldn't be easier to repair the gauge and I replied that there was none.

That car also had the battery on the floor behind the passenger seat and slowly rusted the floor..

Somehow, I suppose, someone was interested in buying it from us..

flipped a lever that gave one 40 more miles or something like that. One had to remember that one had flipped the lever -- I don't think there was a panel light or other indicator, other than that one could look down on the floor by the pedals and see the lever's position, but that's not exactly the most in-your-face reminder.

I don't know if it actually had 2 tanks, or just seemed like it did.

For this exact reason. When the electronics go bad, they are very expensive to fix/replace.

What do you get when you cross an X with a computer?

Be it car, camera, phone, telephone, stove, or whatever, you end up with a computer and all the associated possible ways to fail. Sure many work long past their expected lifetimes, but others...

Crutchfield.com will let you put in your exact make of car, current system and any other details, and will show you what will fit, what features the new unit has (such as Apple Carplay/Android, camera, etc) as well as any wiring harnesses you may need. A quick check shows what looks to be a decent Alpine unit for around $350. Not sure what installation would cost in your area, but a quick call to a local car audio shop would be helpful.

Again, probably. Just an idea for an option. Sorry to hear about your car issues. I have a number of friends with Kias who adore them.
