(2,142 posts)They sell and install them. You can also check local shops that sell truck equipment like brush guards, bed liners, and caps, sometimes they sell hitches and can install it as well.

(2,142 posts)Had one installed by uhaul on a old truck I was going to use to haul stuff up north and for use on my land up there. Cost like 450 for the parts and labor if I remember right.

(5,687 posts)You can do it yourself with a CURT hitch, that you can get from an auto parts store. It's like $225 and bolts on the same way they put it on. The auto parts store can tell you which one to get for your vehicle.
You can look it up on YouTube and see if it has any special directions, usually it's just a few bolts to the frame. It's usually a very easy job.

(33,957 posts)Most come with good instructions and there are DIY videos. Give it a try and you can always find a shop to fix it latter.

(33,957 posts)If looks like I can't do it, at least I'll know what I'm talking about at a shop.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.

(8,387 posts)Do you want to tow anything or just put on a bike rack? Hitches come in several classes, depending on what you have in mind.
For your 2004 Forester, for example, an OE Subaru hitch runs around $300, and aftermarket hitches are about $200. Expect around $250 for installation, depending on the type of hitch.
If you do not have a 2004 Forester, but have one of the many other years and models in which Subaru manufactured automobiles, then it is likely to depend on whether your Subaru is any of those particular years or models, or whether you assembled it yourself as a melange of parts from different models and years and you simply call it a "Subaru" to refer to the company which manufactured the parts which you randomly chose.
U-Haul has a calculator online at https://www.uhaul.com/Trailer-Hitches/
So, for your 1988 Subaru Justy, it will come to around $320.

(8,795 posts)Most have very small tow capacity. The average uhaul trailer is 750 to 1000 pounds. The average Subaru can haul 2500-3000 pounds unless you have the Accent which has a higher tow capacity. The weight of the trailer is empty so there is not too much you can put in it. A 17 foot Boston whaler with motor, battery and 2 gas tanks is about 2000 pounds. Remember. Its not just being able to pull the trailer, its being able to stop when it is pushing you

(13,550 posts)I checked before buying, and YMMV with regards to model year, etc.
The Forester can tow 1500 pounds.
The Outback can tow 2700 pounds.

(51,308 posts)I will be using it only for my John Deere riding mower.
Sometimes for my canoe, which is very lightweight.
bottomofthehill
(8,795 posts)The smaller ones only weigh 4/5 hundred pounds and I would assume the mower weighs in at about the same 4/5 hundred pounds.
