CHRB: Necropsy Finds No Definitive Cause of Death for Medina Spirit
The necropsy performed on ill-fated Kentucky Derby (G1) first-place finisher Medina Spirit revealed no definitive cause of death was not established despite extensive testing, the California Horse Racing Board announced in a release on Feb. 11.
Owned by Zedan Racing Stables and trained by Bob Baffert, Medina Spirit collapsed and died suddenly following a workout at Santa Anita Park on Dec. 6, 2021 due to what was suspected to be a cardiac issue. According to the CHRB release, the son of Protonico was transported to the CAHFS San Bernardino laboratory for the necropsy, which included gross examination of the body and internal organs, and specimen collection for microscopic examination, toxicology, drug testing, and genetic testing, with specimens also stored for possible future testing.
After the examination was completed, Medina Spirit was cremated.
