Given friends of friends were lost (found dead in Summit County, CO) last weekend with their dog-- merely snowshoeing (and not in a specific warning area) it doesn't take much to trigger a deadly avalanche.

The guys in my little town in the mountains built some of those from bikes and I don't what but they called them "snikes". There were three or four of them in a town of about 1100.

Had one as a kid. Really difficult to control in snow. I kind of realized it back then -- these things were dangerous.
