the lessons of the plague

the lessons of the plague

when the plague arrived we danced in both fear and denial
calling out for help and proclaiming our own independence
watching those infected we glanced in mirrors of the nihil
milling among masses hiding exclaiming death’s sentence
divided into believers and unbelievers saints and sinners
espousing facts and rumors quibbling over truth and lies
we not givers only receivers never losers always winners
captured by the body’s humors and held behind the eyes
overwhelming those overwhelmed stretching to the snap
rejecting science accepting magic seeking in desperation
grasping at chance being compelled until that last gasp
accepting reliance as rejecting the tragic death respiration
the plague lies deep within hidden sin and constant waits
opaque it seeps slowly unbidden within despondent gates

jeg.

This reminds me of a conversation I had with a colleague back in 2022. We were co-facilitating a class of young professionals, and on the way back we were talking about the bitter polarization of Americans.

She said that we need an event that forces all together.

I asked, what about COVID? Wasn't that such an event?

She replied it would have been but we had a divider in charge.
