He looks like the sleaziest car salesman on the lot, and flashes a toothy grin that would frighten a small child. It was something that he called the one celebrity a Communist for the red star on her sleeve. Different times.
McLean Stevenson however, is among my favorite personalities. I did some quick refresher on Wiki and saw he was the original base commander on M*A*S*H before Henry Morgan took over in the 4th season. I forgot all about that. His cousin was Adlai Stevenson and he was head of The Young Democrats.
His life got pretty sad after that and he never landed a role of that calibre again. He guest hosted Johnny Carson's show dozens of times and took jobs like Love Boat and of course The Match Game. An attack on that gentle heart of his finally got him in 1996.
Stevenson appeared as a guest panelist for several weeks on Match Game in 1973 and 1974, and again in 1978 on the daytime and nighttime weekly syndicated version. In 1981, he became a regular panelist on the daily syndicated version of Match Game, staying with the show until its cancellation a year later. He would make occasional appearances on the subsequent Match Game-Hollywood Squares Hour in 1983 and 1984.
