Related: About this forumHas anyone had the RSV vaccine?
I want to schedule mine, and see that I can get it along with the flu and pneumonia shots, but I'm a little concerned about side effects. I had RSV almost 2 years ago, and it was pretty bad. I just don't know if I should get them all at the same time.

(6,045 posts)Last year, I signed up to be a substitute teacher and ended up catching it 4 times! The last time was particularly bad. The main part of my lungs were OK, but it settled into the bronchioles where it's much hard to clear out. I am still coughing weeks later.
School is supposed to start up soon. I'm dreading going back. Will stay masked, but it makes for very long and tiring days.

(29,707 posts)I hope it's soon, as I'm over 65 and kind of worried.

(29,707 posts)Seniors (and infants) seem to be at higher risk for severe symptoms, so I believe we'll be getting priority.

(6,045 posts)I live in a small town so maybe it takes longer to distribute out here to us.

(29,707 posts)You say you're in a small town, but maybe a city within driving distance will get it sooner..You should keep checking.

(8,513 posts)I went to the ER at my son's insistence when I had it in December 2021. I actually thought that I might not make it through. I rarely get sick, but that was bad. Then a month later I got COVID. I had already had all the COVOD shots I could get at that point, so it wasn't extremely horrible. The RSV was much, much worse.
How did the RSV compare to Covid? What symptoms put you in the hospital?

(42,820 posts)I know at pharmacies, maybe doctors offices too. But I'm old school & don't want to bombard my body all at once if I can help it. But if it works for others that's ok.

(8,513 posts)Shingrix, flu, and my last COVID shot. It wasn't fun, and I think I should have done them one at a time.

(8,513 posts)It won't be a year since my last one until October. I'll have to check because the option to schedule it was available online.

(18,558 posts)I thought those were every five years. I could be confusing something else, but Im pretty sure I dont get the pneumonia shot annually. I do the flu annually. And if we get some sort of annual Covid shot annually, Ill do that.

(18,558 posts)one a few weeks ago-prevnar 20. I think it had been five years. I remember many years ago- more than twenty-when I got my first pneumonia shot my doctor said it would be the only one I would ever need. Then several years later she said the new research suggested otherwise.

(18,558 posts)I thought they were lifetime, but now I hear 7 years. Im sure my doctor will say time for shingles shot again when the time come. Of all the vaccines, thats the one I most prioritize. I never want shingles. I knew too many who have had it and they say its hell on earth.

(14,561 posts)for my second shot. Actually went to get it and ended up getting Prevnar because they didnt have the second shingles dose I needed that day. I guess it is kept in the refrigerator and their refrigerator had gone out over night. Guessing that was a lot of money.
like getting more than one vaccine at a time. If there is a reaction, you dont know which one it is from.
Rorey
(8,513 posts)I don't think I had much of a reaction from my second Shingrix shot, but I've gotten pretty sick from all of the COVID shots. I just schedule them for when I don't need to do anything, which is most of the time these days.

(18,513 posts)Reason being, I only have 2 arms, and the main side effect I have with a vaccine is soreness at the vaccine site. If I'm getting one vaccine, I can get one in each arm, which I find reasonably tolerabble.
I'm planning to get RSV and pneumonia soon. I'll be due for my second Shingrix shot in October at the earliest and will probably get my flu shot at the same time. Depending on when the next covid shot is available, I'll fit it in around the others one way or another.

(8,513 posts)I've only had two flu shots. After the first one, about 4 years ago, my arm hurt for MONTHS! It wasn't debilitating pain, but definitely ached. I reported it as an adverse effect and got a call from someone about it. He suggested that the pharmacist who administered it probably put it in the wrong spot. Whatever the reason, I hesitated to get another flu shot. Last year's shot didn't cause the same issue.
All I know is that I'll do whatever I can to stay healthy. Side effects generally don't last more than a day and a half, and I can handle that. Good luck with all your shots!

Osterholm is one of the nations leading infectious disease experts. I listen to his podcast, The Osterholm Update, every two weeks when the new one comes out. In the most recent episode (Aug. 24), Osterholm advised the following strategy:
- Get the R.S.V. vaccine as soon as you can.
- Get the next COVID booster as soon as its available.
- For the flu vaccline, wait until you hear of flu activity in your area, since immunity from the vaccine wanes each month and you dont want your immunity to peak too early.
Im getting the R.S.V. shot this week. Ill report any after effects.
Stay healthy!

(3,322 posts)With all of them I had minor soreness in my arm and felt a little off the next day but nothing that affected my normal routine. Both shingle shots had noticeable effects for 2 or 3 days, pneumonia shot had no effect.
Just for the record, I have both COPD and asthma and am 87. Highly recommend the shots, haven't had the flu or even a cold in many years. I do mask in stores or where appropriate.
My best to you.

(8,513 posts)I didn't even get my COVID booster yet, and I'm mad at myself about it. I'm going on a short trip, leaving Sunday, and I wanted to have it a few weeks ago. At this point, I'll just hope for the best. I'll try to get it as soon as I get back.
Some people scoff that I'm so willing to get shot after shot, but I'm going to do whatever I can to get to live a normal life.

(192 posts)And then the COVID booster, going for the FLU soon.
I had no trouble with any of the shots - only side effect was a sore arm.
(I take them one at a time so that I know what causes any side effects.)
Good luck, all

(5,483 posts)Moderna Covid that I had several weeks later was much worse side effects

(10,387 posts)She said it made her feel tired for about a day, but otherwise no problems.
I got RSV, flu and Covid all at the same time. Three different shots. So did my husband. No side effects.

(19,868 posts)I.e., not at the same time as any other shot. I had a somewhat sore arm for a few hours and felt a bit achy in the joints, etc. the next day, but that went away within about 24 hours.
