Related: About this forumI must now be officially OLD!!
I discovered a written check still in my checkbook from Feb. 24 for my Comcast bill. Checked online and it was past due.
I mailed them the invoice statement but not the check. Wasted a stamp.
My son wants to put me in the home now.

(14,561 posts)before I used a debit card, I would write a check, usually at the grocery, then close the check book without handing over the check. I was in my 30s-not exactly old. Just to much on my mind.

(19,525 posts)I decided to do that after my electric bill was overdue..if found it between the seat in my car! Now, Im never late. They send an email saying its due n then another saying it funded. Easy for this old lady.

(9,671 posts)Except the mortgage as I have to make sure theres enough $ there, and I put extra into principal when I can. Usually the only checks I write are to the local sewer and water authority. They are so low-tech they have no online pay feature.

We write checks only for yard work, electrician, etc.
I started putting a little extra on my mortgage checks to whittle down the principal. Over the years it added up. I retired at 60 with a full paid mortgage.

(34,494 posts)At Christmas time, we usually donate some $ to 5 or 6 charities (whichever ones we decide on that year)
Last year, among others, we donated $ to a food bank and an animal shelter.
Well my husband sent the food bank check to the animal shelter and the animal shelter check to the food bank.
Both places were more than forgiving, sent our checks back in a timely manner, and we eventually got them to the right places. The woman from the animal shelter said this happens more than youd think. People just have too many things on their minds these days.

When I was in my 30s (many moons ago), we still mailed checks. I managed to mail the electric company check to the phone company and the phone company check to the electric company. Cant remember who sent the check back first, but they told me it was common. No late penalties or anything.
Make sure to leave a forwarding address to your new home.

(6,193 posts)Checking your bank account, working out which bills needed paying, writing the checks, finding envelopes and stamps, making sure the right check goes into the right envelope, licking stamps, hating the taste of the glue, driving down to mail them.
Now, 10 minutes on the computer pays the bills, instantly.
Seems like a lost art, writing checks. (Thank goodness!)

(26,607 posts)I pay on line.
When I wrote checks, I hated having to do that, tended to postpone it and some of my bills would be paid late. Now, as soon as I get a bill, I go on line and set up the payment. Nothing is ever late.
I do love modern technology.
