One motorcyclist was killed and three other people were hurt — one critically — Saturday afternoon while escorting an Army veteran’s remains back to Nebraska, authorities said.

The tragedy mirrored the circumstances of the accident that claimed the life of the veteran.

Ryan J. Lossing, 38, of Omaha, died in Saturday’s crash, just after 12:45 p.m. about 10 miles east of Atlantic, Iowa, on westbound Interstate 80, the Iowa State Patrol said.

Donald Kerby, 81, of Des Moines, was driving a 2001 Buick Lucerne that changed lanes — apparently to avoid a stock trailer on the right shoulder — and struck the riders, the patrol said.
