They aren't fighting to defend their homeland, or to save Ukraine from Nazification.
I know that the US has sent troops to fight for some less-than-noble causes, but it was almost never just a ruthless land-grab (Mexican-American war being an exception).
The effectiveness of any army is probably dependent on the collective determination of its individual soldiers.
Disclaimer: I was only a less-than-enthusiastic sailor, who was never in a battle -- unless you count the fights with the ship's officers!
