Disney co-owned Hulu bans ads on Climate, Abortion, & Guns undercutting Democrats' 2022 themes

Hulu blocks ads on abortion, guns, and climate change — and Dems aren’t happy

By Makena Kelly Jul 25, 2022

Abortion rights, gun control, and climate change have taken center stage for Democrats running in this year’s midterm elections. But the popular streaming service Hulu has repeatedly rejected Democratic ads focusing on these central campaign issues over the last few weeks, as first reported by The Washington Post on Monday.

On July 15th, a group of Democratic campaign organizations attempted to purchase a joint ad on abortion and gun control on the Disney-backed Hulu platform along with other digital buys on Facebook, YouTube, and Roku and more traditional placements on broadcast and cable channels. The ad ran on every other platform, but Hulu rejected it. Hulu hasn’t told the groups if it will run the ad, a Democratic party official told The Verge.

In a joint statement on Hulu’s rejection on Monday, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and Democratic Governors Association said, “Hulu’s censorship of the truth is outrageous, offensive, and another step down a dangerous path for our country.”

Disney owns 66% of Hulu. Corporate media is actively helping to destroy our democratic institutions.

We only got it to watch a couple of series. When we're done, Hulu is done. We don't pay for ad free so maybe it's better but the service is terrible. Lots of tiny pauses while playing—only a second or two, but sometimes you have to get out of the show & start over to clear it. Then there are times when the show just cuts to a blank screen with the buffering circle. The worst is pausing. And when you pause playing on your own, for some reason it can rarely get you back to the place you were watching & often takes you to the wrong episode, even. It sucks. Worse than Sling, even. Which I got to watch the J6 hearings & will cancel until they're back in fall. I keep all my subs on a calendar with reminders. Streaming is not the carefree, easy access digital dream it was puffed up to be. Don't get me started on really old titles that either rent for the same cost as new titles or can only be purchased.

Hulu political ads: Streaming giant reverses stance, updates ad policy (MarketWatch)

Streaming giant Hulu says it will start running political ads on its platform, reversing an earlier decision to block some ads that angered many Democrats.

“After a thorough review of ad policies across its linear networks and streaming platforms over the last few months, Disney is now aligning Hulu’s political advertising policies to be consistent with the Company’s general entertainment and sports cable networks and ESPN+,” Disney said in a statement to Axios on Wednesday.
