This guy is bringing free television to Detroit -- and the networks are pissed

Despite all of the streaming services now at our fingertips — Disney+, Apple TV+, HBO Max, NBC's Peacock, and Quibi all launched this year, joining giants like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, YouTube Premium, and others — for viewers with a thirst for local programming, sometimes it can all feel a bit like "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner": "Water, water everywhere, nor any drop to drink."

With a new app called Locast, attorney David Goodfriend is trying to change that.

Billed as a way to watch broadcast TV over the internet, Locast entered the Detroit market earlier this month, giving 4.5 million viewers in nine counties in Southeast Michigan a way to watch more than 60 locally broadcast television channels — including ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, The CW, and PBS — for free, without an antenna or pricey cable or satellite TV bundle.

Programs on these channels are among the most popular and widely watched, and for years, anyone could watch them with a good old-fashioned pair of "rabbit ears" on top of their TV set. But the technology is still not accessible to everyone.

My ma would always say that ditty and I don't think I ever looked for the source! But mb I did.

She'd say:"Water, water everywhere, but never a drop to drink."

She used to say 'The Wreck of the Hesperus' describing something.

number of TV shows via the internet. I have Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime, and I'm not willing to pay for any more. One friend has suggested I try the free trial period with various services, and while she's probably right as in that's a good way to watch stuff, I spend less time watching shows than most people do. I'm NOT trying to promote myself as some kind of paragon of virtue. I'm simply describing my watching habits. Sort of like, if we start talking about books to read, and I wax enthusiastic about science fiction, and you say you prefer mysteries and someone else chimes in about reading historical novels. They are all valid genres, and we don't all need to like the same ones. Same with TV. I have my own personal and somewhat limited interests in shows. You have other interests. And mine are not better or worse than yours. Just different.

Thank you for posting this! I installed the app this morning and it works beautifully. I have an antenna, but it is nice to have a back-up.
