Without the clip v mag, etc. terminology debate, what new gun regulations are needed?

In this thread we're not going to have any of the BS correct other folks terminology arguments.

I think it's clear that many people here agree that the recent bipartisan bill is still missing some useful measures.

1. Ten day waiting period (similar to hunting and driving licences)
2. Assault weapon ban
3. Universal background check
4. No guns for domestic abusers
5. No high capacity (more than 8 ) magazine/clip
6. Computerize gun records so they are searchable like vin # for cars
7. Must get training to own a gun (original NRA proposal from 1900s) and pass safety test

1. Waiting period for what? For the background check? Does that include private sales?
2. AWB - What's an assault weapon? Definitions have been too varied. Just explain what functionality is to be restricted.
3. UBC - excellent idea. Give private sellers a means to do this.
4. I think domestic abusers and non-domestic boyfriends and covered by the new bill but for sure a good idea.
5. 8 round or less mags - Is that new sales or does it include the billions already out there?
6. Gun records - see below.
7. Training - seems like a good idea. Prerequisite for purchase or is there a grace period from when you buy?

Any thoughts on safe storage?

6. Gun records - many people are against registration. I'm not in favor since there's a lot of potential for abuse of that type of system. What are you accomplishing with that system?

Thanks

2. Clip size
Mon Jul 11, 2022, 07:20 PM

I mean, unless you're willing to get rid of military rifles, clip size is really about the only meaningful action that can be taken. Of course you can some how increase the restrictions on who and how people get weapons, but really unless you do the whole "prove you need it" kind of restrictions, most of these mass shooters would still have access.

Red Flag laws are nice, and useful, but as we've seen, they are desperately dependent upon all aspects of society to actually act upon them. Too many people in law enforcement and in Justice have a reluctance to use them. And quite honestly, the bill that passed just "encouraged" states to pass such laws. It provided for more "mental health" funding without and real significant requirement that those efforts demonstrate that they actually accomplish anything.

At the very least, the bill should have established that if these efforts didn't reduce mass shootings by some measurable amount, then more restrictive actions would take effect.

Jul 2022

I'm not up for the "prove what the correct size limit is" exercise. Keep in mind that there are billions of mags in civilian hands now that hold from 5 to 50 rounds and most semi-auto handguns are now sold with 10-20 round mags.

I'm mostly okay with red flag laws as long due process is respected.

AFAIK infantry is issued an M-16. They're free. IMO, not appropriate for either hunting or home defense.

1- Training? I'd be okay with a training requirement but you do need a gun to train. I'd be okay with a prerequisite safety and law class as well.

2- Proficiency? At doing what? If you will be carrying, there should be licensing program that tests your proficiency, IMO.

3- Responsibility? IMO it should be the burden of a seller to provide a trigger or safety lock for the gun sold.

Pardon my sarcasm and hyperbole but Marines are paid to be Marines, follow orders through the chain of command from the National Military Command Center and abide by the UCMJ. I see no more relevance to living as a Marine than being paid to do so when not a Marine.

I guess you guess poorly.

I hear myself loud and clear. I am onboard with plenty of legal restrictions on guns. I don't really have much time to give a full description of the types of restrictions that I am and am not okay with. If you want to find an issue with me, I can point out that I think an AWB is pointless and a general registration requirement is a terrible idea.

Don't get me wrong. I'm happy that you decided to participate in the thread because that's what good Democrats do. We discuss and fairly debate. Finding reasons to shutdown discussion and rush a conclusion is Republican thing like the way they pushed Barrett into the SC.

I'm not offend nor shy. Hope to hear more from you.

If you would like to discuss something about the video I'm willing. I did respond point by point to your replies in post #19. Do as you wish. The pro-control folks are those that need to work on passing legislation and getting votes to reverse the packing of the courts by trump.

Hunters use higher velocity rounds to humanely take game. A low velocity round is more likely to injure an animal, not kill it. Depending on the velocity you want to set, of course, but velocity decreases with range, making hunting out west an almost impossibility, as wide open spaces don't allow you to get close to game.

On the other hand it could cut accidental deaths. It would cut accidents with children.

Make it illegal to process or store a semi-auto with a round in the chamber. Except when at a range or in a defensive situation..

I don't carry, for that matter I don't like shooting handguns other than black powder and I don't own any. I would have to defer to someone who has knowledge of concealed and open carry protocols, maybe law enforcement.

As far as storage, I suppose empty chamber is good.

For 2020 (most recent CDC data) there were 74 accidental firearm deaths for ages 0 to 12. I expect there were probably triple that number of injuries.

-NO felony or misdemeanor conviction for any violent crime. No exceptions, no exemptions, if you've ever used force or threatened to against another human in other than self defense or defense of home NO gun

-No restraining order against you. Of any kind.

-A background check for any outstanding fines or warrants.

-Passing a basic written test on safety, storage, responsibility for *EVERY* bullet fired, and laws about when lethal force can be used.

-Being able to demonstrate proficiency at shooting, clearing and storing a gun, given at a CONVIENENT local range; no fee may be charged for this.

I have guns, I like shooting, I have no problem with someone using lethal force in the defense of life, liberty, or property. *AND* I believe that there are people who should *NOT* have guns or access to them.
