Sure it originally came from Christianity but it seems to me it's moved beyond that over the years to have a generic meaning of death as well. Also it was erected shortly after the war so the monument has historical value.
A new monument that is made in the shape of a cross in defiance of current standards might be objectionable but I don't see the value of trying to rejigger the past to fit modern standards.
(With exceptions of course such as racist iconography that demeans people.)

Yep. Consider all the people who put a cross-shaped grave marker over their PETS buried in the back yard.
93 years ago, I dont think everyone in that town would have agreed that only Christians died fighting the Great War. Even then, the cross was a symbol of death regardless of the faith of the fallen.
