And France would do nothing?
Albert Speer says in Inside the third Reich that Hitler was surprised that they declared war. I know that Speer is not always reliable as the narrator of past events, but this i find believable.

(20,896 posts)He expected War eventually but had hoped they would not come to the aid of distant Poland and accept the German annexation as fait accompli.
Much of the impetus for The Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact however was knowing there was a risk France and Great Britain would fulfill their treaty obligations and come to Poland's aid The Pact ensured the eastern border would be secure will the German armies moved to deal with the threat from the West.

(14,180 posts)is that it was the German Jewish scientists who fled the country that ended up in US and were instrumental in the development of the atomic bomb. Had they stayed in Germany and been loyal to the Nazis, Germany probably could have developed atomic weapons before we did. One bomb on London and one on Moscow, with a threat to hit New York or DC next, would have likely left a shaky peace with Hitler in control of all of Europe and Russia.
