I highly recommend the Netflix series "Five Came Back"

https://www.netflix.com/watch/80060407

It's about five famous movie directors volunteering their talents to the US government during WW2 and also being near the combat in some cases. I learned a lot about Huston, Capra, Ford, Wyler, and Stevens. They produced color films of the combat (also staged combat) and other wartime scenes that are really spectacular considering the B&W I usually see.

It was a very good documentary. The price they paid for doing what they felt they needed to do at the time was enormous.
