There was a small fly crawling around the inside of the lamp shade, next to where we were sitting. Arthur jumped up and, after just a few tries. SNAGGED IT. He held it between his paws for a few seconds and the it looked like he was going to gobble it down. Instead he delivered a death bite and spit it back out, right next to me. Gee, thanks son.
He was very proud of himself.
"There, mom. Got it for ya!"
He's such a good boy.

(18,530 posts)When she was getting ready to catch one, she'd get down into a crouching position, make little clicking sounds, then wiggle her rear end and POUNCE. She almost always got them, and when she did, she gobbled them up.
It was kind of gross when you think of the kinds of places where a fly has been, but Snowflake's hunting skills were impeccable and It was quite entertaining to watch her. Whenever one of us noiced her stalking a fly, we'd say, "Oh look, the mighty huntress is on the prowl!" And then we'd settle in to wait for the butt wiggle and the pounce.
It sounds like Arthur has good hunting instincts but maybe didn't care for the taste of that fly (and who could blame him ). Here's hoping the next time he decides to hunt some prey he'll find it more to his liking!

(1,047 posts)It comes to the point when he's scanning for flies, we say he's surveiling, when he sees one, he's tracking, and he then goes for the launch, and at 25+ pounds (not fat, as part of his Maine Coon heritige), he's able to jump up to 5 feet off the ground. He's only missed a couple of times, and he does eat what he catches. That's why we call him "feline air defense".
