Trying to spend a few minutes each day snuggling the chicks
.telling them what good girls they are and using their names so they learn them. Nugget and Polly were especially cuddly this afternoon. This is my process with chickens
its not for everybody. My mother in law thinks Im nuts
she might be right. Even if shes right, Ill dont regret doing it.

(34,546 posts)Neat pics! Why would anyone think cuddling such adorable little animals would be nuts?
Do they bond with humans?
Im kinda envious
..

(24,009 posts)who did not know her name and come when I called her. Some like to snuggle or at least sit in my lap and some prefer not to have more contact than a pet
kinda like people.

(1,230 posts)You be you, MontanaMama. You wear them well.😉
My daughter raised chickens in 4-H way back in the last millennium and it was something. They came in the mail and stayed in a big box in the living room with a light bulb to keep them warm while they grew their feathers. My mom thought I was crazy, too.
Daughter had one huge wicked rooster who would sneak up on me when I was pegging out the laundry and try to rake my legs with his spurs. The second time he drew blood I gave him to a co-worker who turned him into chicken dinner for his family. No regrets. Hens dont need a rooster to lay eggs, but without his protection we did lose some eggs to a king snake and raccoon. A small price to pay for getting shed of that wicked rooster. And those fresh eggs with yolks almost orange, instead of pale yellow
yum.

(1,866 posts)But I was kind of expecting marshmallow Peeps art. I love Peeps-- not to eat, but when used in quirky art images. I can't always figure out how to post pictures here in DU, but seeing a recreation of a mad scientist's lab with Peeps is such a weird pleasure.
MontanaMama
(24,009 posts)I will patiently wait for your marshmallow peep photos!

(1,866 posts)But depending on the source, "Copy link address" works from time to time.
Below you will see marshmallow peeps roasting marshmallows--Is it Meta? Or is it some genre of horror?
MontanaMama
(24,009 posts)Thats adorable is that okay to say?

(1,866 posts)Second, I didn't create this Peep art. It's just that when I saw the thread title, my mind automatically went to this art form. I love the juxtaposition between the literally sweet (and fluffy!) candy and weird, often dark themes. If you like this stuff, there's plenty online--with new content every year around Easter.
Your pictures with real, feathered peeping chicks was truly adorable and I didn't mean to distract from that. Thank you for sharing.

(7,192 posts)As you know, it makes it so much easier to handle them when they're older.
I had one, a Polish rooster, black body & white head, who ended up being a "lap chicken." He would hop onto my lap & snuggle, it was so cute!
MontanaMama
(24,009 posts)Theyre so much easier to handle and care for if they are used to their people.

When you saw him in the sunlight his black feathers had iridescent shades of green & purple & blue, he was beautiful!
Since I moved I don't have chickens anymore, but I will soon!

Im fascinated that they learn their names.
My husbands daughter keeps a few chickens. Her brother has jokingly named them Marsala, Florentine, Kung Pao and Cordon Bleu.

MontanaMama
(24,009 posts)Theyre on my shoulder and all over me never had one peck at me youre kidding, right?
HubertHeaver
(2,526 posts)We had white rock and leghorns straight-run from the hatchery. They would peck at a reflection--on the water-jars, windows or each other. I would not trust them near my eyes.
MontanaMama
(24,009 posts)The girls love to look at themselves they might peck a little bit at the mirror but nothing really aggressive. I also put a xylophone out there its colorful and they like pecking at that too I guess it keeps them from pecking at each other.
