Always fertilize with something organic in early spring when hydrangeas first start putting out new growth. Milorganite can be purchased at home depot. Good organic choice. If you want, throw in a handful of osmocote to provide season long slow release nitrogen. I personally would avoid water soluble or fast release nitrogen sources when actively blooming. I know people her in the south with good soil that NEVER fertilize their hydrangeas. Remember too that hydrangeas love well drained soil that is kept moist but not saturated. That is probably the biggest problem for home gardeners. Finding a spot with the right soil and light isn't always so easy. It's best to pick a good spot that meets the light requirements and do whatever necessary to amend the soil before planting.
