(522 posts)Question...do you removed the bindings of the bales? Also, do you use a liquid general purpose fertilizer after you have finished prepping the bales? A friend used this method for growing basil a few years ago. He pulled up and brought in one of the plants and it was the biggest basil plant I had ever seen. Now I raise most of my veggies in raised beds, but am going to 5 gallon buckets for my toms, eggplant and peppers this year.
Thanks for posting this.

(60,477 posts)Once the bales are prepped, I use a balanced fertilizer weekly - they need lots of watering (it is all above the ground and they get baked pretty good by the sun), so there is significant leeching of nutrition out of the bales that need regular replacement.
Ask anything if you give it a try - I can guide you along if you wish.
I may change my mind about the buckets and use bales instead for the toms, eggplant and peppers. Three would fit nicely in the bed I am going to use for them. Does two of each sound about right per bale?

(9,992 posts)Our "spring" is featuring the five inches of snow we got yesterday melting into a hideous sludge today. Oh well, at least the sun is shining! (BTW, it was 67 here on Wednesday. Global Weirding, indeed.)
